The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) for 2024 has been officially released, showcasing the top higher education institutions across India. This annual ranking, conducted by the Ministry of Education, evaluates and ranks institutions based on various criteria, providing a comprehensive guide to the best universities, colleges, and specialized institutions in the country.
Key Highlights
The NIRF 2024 rankings underscore the continued dominance of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) across both overall and specialized categories. IIT Madras has retained its premier position in the overall and engineering categories for the 8th consecutive year, solidifying its status as India’s leading institution. Similarly, IIM Ahmedabad continues to lead in the management category, followed closely by IIM Bangalore and IIM Kozhikode. In the field of law, the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) Bengaluru has maintained its top spot for the 7th year in a row.

New Changes in NIRF
This year, the NIRF introduced 3 new categories: Open Universities, Skill Universities, and State-Funded Government Universities. These additions reflect the evolving landscape of higher education in India and the growing importance of specialized institutions.
In the Open Universities category, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in New Delhi secured the top position, followed by Netaji Subhash Open University in Kolkata, and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University in Ahmedabad.
The Skill Universities category was led by Symbiosis Skills and Professional University, Pune, followed by Shri Vishwakarma Skill University, Palwal, and Bhartiya Skill Development University, Rajasthan.
In the State-Funded Government Universities category, Anna University in Chennai topped the list, followed by Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and Savitribai Phule Pune University.
Additionally, the faculty-to-student ratio criteria were modified for 2024. In medical institutes, the ratio was revised to 1:10, while in state government universities, it was adjusted to 1:20.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (now the Ministry of Education) in 2015. The framework ranks institutions based on 5 broad parameters: Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcome (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception (PR).
